Interview with Dena Garson, author of Risky Business, and a giveaway too!

Dena Garson loves to read romance—the hotter the better. When one of her BFFs said “one of us should be writing this stuff”, she took up the challenge. If she isn’t writing, she’s designing jewelry but somehow she still manages to make it into the office on a regular basis.

This is what she shared with me:

The title of your book is Risky Business. How did you come up with it? Is that a part that you enjoy or is it hard for you? I have several workplace-contemporary romances and I’ve tried to tie them together using the word “Business.” The one prior was Down To Business. I usually enjoy coming up with the title. They often come to me before I finish the book. Some of my working titles have even stuck all the way to publication.

Do you have to concentrate and visualize the story or do ideas just randomly come to you when you're out and about? Usually both. Most scenes come to me randomly but others I have to think through– especially those where I have to tie two scenes together. I’m definitely a visual person – if I can’t “see” them in my head, it’s just not getting on paper.

In what scenario do you do your best work? In the evening, when I have some quiet in the house – either the boys are gone or they’re doing their own thing in their rooms (separately, because God knows if they’re together fighting is inevitable) - and I don’t have a bunch of promo stuff on my to-do list (or what I do have on the list, I don’t want to do!). Then I can curl up on my bed or couch and focus. With no interruptions. And no one reading over my shoulder. *sigh*

Do you prefer to go to the theater or wait for the DVD? Wait for DVD. There are very few movies I’m willing to deal with the crowds and the expense of going to the theater. Besides, I like being able to pause the movie if I need to go to the bathroom or get a refill on my food or drink. Great point! I prefer movie nights at home as well. :D

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream? Rocky Road. YUM!

Where are we most likely to find you this summer when you are not working: swimming, sunbathing while reading a book, playing sports, or indoors with the AC on full blast I have two very active boys who keep me running in circles with various sports and activities. They LOVE the neighborhood swimming pool too. So I do spend a lot of time on a lounger reading (or writing) while they play. But I have to admit, I don’t tan – I’m too fair skinned and burn so I always look for a shady corner.

What food can't you live without? Homemade mashed potatoes. That is my go-to comfort food. Yummmy!

Do you prefer quiet or loud? Loud. I love loud rock music. It’s a wonder I haven’t blown out the speakers in my car ten times over (or my ear drums!). Even at home I often turn the TV on just to have some background noise.

What types or genres of books do you like to read? Romance – usually paranormal or historical. And definitely steamy romance. But I’ve also gotten sucked into a few YA this past year or two.

What is your favorite part of the day? First thing in the morning. That’s when I’m the most energetic. :D Lucky you! I am sooo not a morning person.

Who is the first person you call with good or bad news? Usually my mom.

What is your favorite T. V. show? Who is your favorite celebrity? My favorite TV show is Doctor Who. But I usually have reruns of The Big Bang Theory running all week. My favorite celebrity is probably Robert Downy Jr.

What is your biggest pet peeve? Slow drivers in the passing lane!!! Uuuuuggg! Ooohhh sister you are preaching to the choir!

What is your biggest weakness? I tend to over think things. I love to see how people answer this question. Some tell me their favorite food or such and others use it to reflect inward.

How do you prefer to communicate ( in person, texting, email, or phone)? In person. There is a wealth of information to be gathered through non-verbal gestures, body language and visual cues.

Last but not least, what is the riskiest thing you ever did? Getting a divorce and proving that I could make it on my own.

Thank you Dena, for letting me interrogate you!

Excerpt:

“And off they go,” Mia mumbled as she watched her traitorous friends weave their way across the room, leaving her alone with Jake. She turned and looked up into his eyes. Even though the lights were too low to see the exact shade, she knew they were the color of well-worn denim. “I hope you’re aware of what you unleashed on your pals.”

She considered the man standing before her. He was tall with broad, strong-looking shoulders. She knew he played ball with some of the guys in the office because she’d often heard them talking about the games over coffee in the break room. The way his shirts fit indicated he worked out. Add that to his classic blond hair and blue eyes and he was definitely drool-worthy, as Mandy would say.

The biggest question in Mia’s mind was whether or not he would ever see her as anything but an analyst with more opinions than boobs. Thankfully she had the data to back those opinions up.

“They may thank me in the morning,” Jake said with a twinkle in his eye.

“They might,” she conceded.

He stepped closer to Mia. Close enough that she could feel the warmth of his body radiating to her already flushed skin.

“Besides,” he lowered his voice and held Mia’s gaze, “it served its purpose.”

“What purpose is that?”

“To get you to myself.”

My Thoughts:

This one was enjoyable but not as fantastic as it could've been. This was a quick read which was perfect.

The main characters were well developed and likable buuuutttt, I deemed this to be more sexual than sensual. There were more sexy scenes and I really didn't "feel" their relationship other than that.

Did I enjoy this book? Definitely, I just would have liked more love and a tad less lust.

It was a fun, dishy read with plenty of steam. I received an ecopy in exchange for my honest opinion.

    1. The hardest thing about writing this book was keeping the focus on Mia and Jake instead of branching off to some of the fun secondary characters who popped up.
